HOME YOGA PRACTICE

Yogi Amrit Desai says that  'taking a yoga class once per week is very good for you.  Practicing at home every day is 10X better'.  I think it is 100X better.

 

I have evaluated how I feel when I don’t do a regular daily practice and compared that to when I do a regular daily yoga practice (10-30 minutes).  Here is what I found.

 

When I practice regularly,

-I have little or no pain in my body.

-I have ease of movement.

-My emotions stay within a range that does not include extremes.

-I feel at peace, most of the time

 

When I DON’T practice yoga regularly,

-the pain returns – in various, ever changing places.

-I feel stiff.

-don’t get me started on the drivers in Massachusetts.

-that feeling of peace dissipates to happening only occasionally.

 

My recommendation:  start practicing at home every day.  We can all find 15 minutes to step on the mat and do 3 poses.  For me, I start with this intention and usually end up practicing a little longer.  Always do at least 1-5 minute relaxation at the end.  I cannot emphasize this enough: breathe, breathe, breathe.  Full yogic breaths throughout your practice., even if that is all you do.

 

Regular students have received your homework for the next 3-4 weeks until September classes start again.  This is a good time to establish a practice that you can carry with you for the rest of your life.

Each one of you may think a different thing about what I am teaching in our yoga classes, but here is what I want most for you all – a home practice.  Then you will have yoga anytime you want!!!
